Information and Solutions for Termite Treatment

Termites: understanding them to better protect your home

Termites can cause considerable damage to the wooden structures of homes. To detect them and act effectively, it is essential to understand their life cycle, the areas at risk, and the professional solutions available.

The main species present in France

In France, six species of termites have been identified, including five subterranean termites of the genus Reticulitermes and one species of drywood termite , Kalotermes flavicollis . These insects live in the soil and come up into the woods where they feed, causing damage that is sometimes invisible for years.

The main areas affected are the south and west of France, including Charente-Maritime , Landes , Roussillon and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .

Recognizing an infestation

Termites live hidden, away from light. They burrow into the wood, following the fibers and leaving thin, clean tunnels. Soil mixed with sawdust is often found at baseboards or on walls. This highlights the importance of regular monitoring using termite traps .

Detection and prevention

Installing termite traps allows you to detect their presence before they cause too much damage. These traps are placed approximately every 5 meters around the building and then checked regularly. If termite activity is detected, a curative treatment can be implemented using termite baits containing hexaflumeron .

The solutions offered by Termite Traps

  • Installation of termite traps on the ground or on walls

⚖️ Legislation and obligations in case of termite infestation

The fight against termites is governed by law no. 99-471 of June 8, 1999 relating to the prevention and control of termites and other wood-boring insects.

This regulation sets out several obligations for owners:

  • Mandatory declaration to the town hall : any owner of a building infested with termites must report the presence of the infestation to their town hall.
  • Termite diagnosis during the sale : in areas delimited by prefectural decree, a pest report less than 6 months old is required before any real estate transaction.
  • Responsibility of co-ownerships : if termites are detected in the common areas, it is up to the co-owners' association to make the declaration and the necessary treatments.
  • Risk areas : the list of municipalities affected by a prefectural decree is regularly updated.

📍 You can consult this official FCBA map to check if your municipality is classified as at risk.

💡 These measures aim to limit the spread of termites and to protect built heritage throughout the territory.
